Preschool, Nursery School, Childcare Center? What’s best for your family?

We’re pleased to offer the Rochester MN Guide to Early Education to help you in making your decision.  Picking a preschool, nursery school or childcare center that fits your child’s and your family’s needs can be an overwhelming task.  As parents, we are clearly aware of the importance of our decision.  The businesses below are eager to chat with you about how their program just might be the best fit for your child.

So what is the difference between the three options? It is important to note that all options are focused on the educational and social development of your children, just in subtly different ways.

  • Preschool will most often provide care for shorter hours and are closed for holidays, breaks, and summer, though some may offer full-time programs, extended care, and summer options. Additionally, preschools tend to be for children age 3 – 5.
  • Childcare Centers may be a more convenient choice for working parents because they usually provide full-time care, even during school breaks. And they generally accept a wider age range: infants through pre-kindergarteners and even school-aged children.
  • Nursery School can offer both shorter hours and extended care options for children 2 -5 years old (in some cases younger!)  Nursery schools also tend to place emphasis and focus on experiential and social learning.

We are so pleased to provide the Rochester MN Guide to Early Education as a resource to our readers. This guide will provide you with the opportunity to research the perfect preschool, nursery school or childcare center to fit your family’s needs.

You left out a huge section in early childhood care options! In home child care providers!! Not only is it usually a less expensive option, it offers something that none of the centers, preschools, or nursery schools can, a small home-like atmosphere! Most all providers have a preschool curriculum, have all day hours of care and are open most holidays (besides the big ones). Not only that but a huge percent of providers have a degree in Early Childhood Education, in one form or another. I wish you would give the parents of Rochester ALL their options!

      Hi Alyssa,
We understand your concerns. In fact, our team went back for quite a long time trying to determine if we would be able to include in home daycare providers. We love our in-home daycare providers and there are many on our team that utilize your incredible care. Ultimately, it came down to a logistics decision. We understand that licensing is a very important process for in-home care providers. We didn’t think that we had the capacity or know-how to ensure valid and current licensing for the in-home daycare providers that were interested. We know that there are so very many in Rochester! We wanted to be sure to only include verified and correctly licensed homes and we were quite nervous that one might sneak through which would be insulting to others who ensure that their licenses are accurate and up to date. We are so sorry Alyssa. When we receive inquiries about in-home daycares in Rochester we direct them to the state resource that provides the information. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. [email protected]

I feel that the in-home care provider option should at the least be mentioned. My family sent our children to an in-home provider and both were more than ready for school when it came time. I understand not wanting to single out any group or possibly letting the unlicensed through in a spotlight, but that group of child care providers deserves a mention in this article.

Hi Jon, thanks for your note. You’ve given us some important points to think about. You are right that we have neglected to even mention the in-home option due to our nervousness around licensing. However, we will be adding a link to the searchable database to this post to ensure that in-home providers are at mentioned. Thank you for your comment. –Rochester MN Moms Blog
